ARIZONA COLLEGE TRIP

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. Their Aerospace Engineering is #1 in the country for colleges not offering doctorate programs, and 11th overall. Six alumni are current or former astronauts and ERAU is the FAA’s largest provider of air traffic controllers with bachelor’s degrees. All programs are direct entry, meaning applicants are evaluated based on their academic interests and admitted students jump right into their program. Primary fields of study are aviation, space, applied science, computers & technology, cyber security & intelligence, engineering, and business.

All programs are hands-on with a focus on project-based learning. There are no lecture halls, but dozens of specialized labs dedicated to undergraduate education, including propulsion labs, wind tunnel labs, advanced vehicle labs, an air traffic control simulation lab, an observatory, a modern physics/optics lab, an aircraft crash investigation lab, and robotics labs, just to name a few.  The student-to-faculty ratio is 16:1, with all classes taught by professors. Professors are required to hold office hours a minimum of 10 hours each week, and students say that professors’ open door policy builds relationships with their professors that is “one of dialogue and mentorship”.

“A commitment to undergraduate education with experienced faculty who bring real-world lessons to the classroom is what we’re all about,” said Dr. Mark Sensmeier, aerospace engineering department chair. “Our faculty average over 12 years of experience from places like Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, General Electric (GE), U.S. Air Force, GKN, and others. The perspective they bring to our education allows our students to hit the ground running in the aerospace industry.”

Embry-Riddle Prescott’s rural campus is located in the Bradshaw Mountains of Arizona, close to the Grand Canyon and the red rocks of Sedona. The Prescott campus is home to approximately 2,400 undergraduates, while their larger sister campus is in Daytona Beach, FL. is home to 5,000 undergraduate students.
